Darwin McCallian Makes $1.225 million Gift to SCOB

Gift will be used to further student experiences and faculty excellence

June 12, 2023

Darwin McCallianDarwin McCallian, a 1975 alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences, has stepped up during the Be So BOLD fundraising campaign to support Sycamores for years to come.

McCallian graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Indiana State University. During his time as a student, he was regularly involved in campus activities such as Theater, Blue Berets, Tandemonia, Campus Revue, and Songfest.

In 1981, he received his MBA from the University of Baltimore. During his professional career, McCallian worked in various roles at the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, the Justice Department, and the Treasury Department before retiring in 2008.

“As a university, we are fortunate to have thoughtful donors and alums, like Darwin, who truly care about our students’ future. The Darwin McCallian Executive Leadership Forum Endowment and Darwin McCallian Endowed Professor of Business will be fundamental pieces of our experiential learning process while providing valuable resources to the next generation of business leaders. Indiana State University is sincerely grateful for this wonderful gift,” said Dr. Deborah Curtis, ISU President.

$225,000 of his gift will establish the Darwin McCallian Executive Leadership Forum Endowment. This forum will bring influential thought leaders to the Scott College of Business (SCOB) to share their leadership philosophy, business expertise, professional experiences, and career journeys with students, faculty, and the campus community.

“Through thoughtful collaboration with Dean Daugherty, we were able to create a forum that will significantly expand the traditional classroom experience, which is something I have been dreaming of since the 1970s,” said Darwin McCallian. “It is my hope that future speakers will be graduates of the Scott College of Business who had attended earlier forums when they were students and grew into well-rounded professionals in the business world.”

The remaining $1 million of his gift is a commitment in his estate and will establish the Darwin McCallian Endowed Professor of Business.

“Establishing a professorship in business bestows a level of prestige that is unique and tremendously valuable for the college long-term, and the McCallian Executive Leadership Forum will bring influential industry professionals to campus that share their knowledge with our current students,” said Scott College of Business Dean Terry Daugherty.

In consort with the Darwin McCallian Executive Leadership Forum, this endowed position aims to raise the visibility and stature of Indiana State University and the Scott College of Business.

“As I look back on my education at ISU, it is apparent the professors I had impacted my success the most. I wanted to find a way to grant current students a similar experience, and creating the Darwin McCallian Endowed Professor of Business is my way of accomplishing that,” McCallian said. “This professorship enriches the student experience, brings visibility to the SCOB, and sets Indiana State apart as a university of choice for future business leaders.”

The Darwin McCallian Endowed Professor of Business will support faculty in the SCOB while allowing the Dean to honor or recruit a highly qualified faculty member to further promote Indiana State University’s excellence in instruction and research.

“Because of Darwin’s generosity, the Scott College of Business will influence student success for generations,” stated Dean Daugherty. “Great business education involves an all-encompassing experience that happens both inside and outside the classroom, which is exactly his vision for this gift.”

Working together, both of McCallian’s endowments will enhance the student experience for Sycamores on a degree path in the SCOB.

“Darwin McCallian is a Sycamore to the core. He has continuously given back to his alma mater and is being bold in his support of Scott College of Business students,” said Vice President of University Advancement and CEO of the ISU Foundation Andrea Angel. “Darwin sees the importance of providing resources, like additional learning experiences and world-renowned faculty, to further enhance the education provided at Indiana State. His continued generosity is sincerely appreciated.

OSCM Program Featured by Conexus Indiana

June 12, 2023

The first in of a series of articles highlighting the work of Indiana’s post-secondary institutions in retaining advanced manufacturing and logistics (AML) graduates in the state by Conexus Indiana featured Dr. Kuntal Bhattacharyya and the Scott College of Business' Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM) program.

The article explains how Indiana is a state where advanced manufacturing and logistics account for nearly 31% of GDP, Bhattacharyya – better known as “Dr. B” – believes one key to improving retention is exposing students to the innovative and entrepreneurial makers and movers that operate in Indiana. That’s why every spring you will find Dr. B taking seniors in the Supply Chain Management program at Indiana State University on a tour of Indiana advanced manufacturing and logistics companies.

Most important, perhaps, Dr. B works to create a program specifically tailored to appeal to the expectations of the next generation entering the workforce. He appreciates that up-and-coming generations are technologically fluent and that they seek to work with organizations that align with their values. “For example, when I graduated, the only thing I cared about was a good-paying job,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many students today give up on lucrative offers because they don’t match with things like their notions of sustainability.”

What the Job Market Looks Like for New College Graduates

May 6, 2023

Recent graduate Kyle Koch and Dr. David Fleming were recently interviewed by WTHI-TV 10.

The job hunt is on for college graduates. One expert said there are some great opportunities available for this batch of college grads.

Kyle Koch is one of those graduates. The Financial Services and Finance major graduated from Indiana State University Saturday. He's ready to put his college years behind him.

"Covid really made an impact on it," he said. "But, I believe we were able to make the most of it."

For most, graduation means looking for that first job. Indiana State Business Professor David Fleming said there are plenty of opportunities for graduates like Koch.

Fleming said there are a lot of job openings in the business and STEM fields. He said this thanks to the older generation moving on.

"We've seen more of the Boomer generation transferring out of the workforce now," Fleming said. "Covid made them realize they may need to step away from the workforce and it's giving more opportunities for our students."

Fleming said there are jobs available in other fields too, but it may be tougher to find them. He said graduates may need to be flexible and use the skills they learned in school.

"Not everybody is going to be able to find a career in their major necessarily," he said. "But, getting those skill sets that allow them to bridge from whatever their degree is into a profitable career."

Still, Fleming said to make sure graduates are following their passions and putting themselves in a work environment that fits them.

Koch feels he has done just that. He's headed back home to Chicago to work for ECC Insurance Brokers. He said he can't wait to begin.

"I think I'm prepared," he said. "I'm excited for that, and I'm excited about the whole industry and just to make it my own."

The Made @ Plainfield GEODIS Logistics 4.0 Innovation Hub was visited by 25 high school students on April 28. The students from Arsenal Tech and Purdue Polytechnic high schools were there to explore the possibilities offered by supply chain and logistics technologies for future job options – and to get hands-on training on programming and using warehouse robots.

The event showcased our Operations & Supply Chain Management program and was led by Dr. Kuntal Bhattacharyya. Dr. Paul Schikora, Dr. Milton Soto-Ferrari and Mrs. Tammy Spivey also participated by engaging students in data analytics exercises. The featured activity though was Dr. Bhattacharyya and two of our alums who work at GEODIS, Roland Wilson and Charlotte Barger, demonstrating how state-of-the art logistics robots are used to improve inventory management and efficiency in the supply chain industry.

Dr. Bhattacharyya explained that "The superimposition of #industry40 ("smart factories") attributes has taken logistics and warehouse management to a different level. From AI and ML to predictive analytics and cybersecurity - modern logistics have gone through a complete overhaul, thanks to automation."

Lonzell Mobley, a student at Purdue Polytechnic, said, "I want to look further into the profession because now I know that the supply and demand are a thing, but I didn’t know how far they went cause logistics, in terms of suppliers and things like that, so now I feel like that might be a more viable career opportunity for me."

Scott College of Business Part-time MBA is One of the Best

April 27, 2023

Scott College of Business, Federal HallThe Scott College of Business’s part-time MBA program is getting national recognition as one of the best programs in the country. US News & World Report releases an annual report showcasing the country’s best graduate programs in several fields. In the part-time MBA program for 2023-2024, Indiana State University ranks as one of the best out of nearly 300 schools. Including Indiana State, only eight universities in Indiana were recognized for this prestigious honor, including Indiana University, Butler University, and Valparaiso University.

Scott College of Business Dean Terry Daugherty said, “Our faculty and staff are dedicated to providing a top MBA program designed to meet the needs of working professionals seeking to advance their careers. We celebrate this recognition with our alums and current students because it reflects their professional impact. Go Sycamores!”

US News and World Reports consider several factors in determining rankings for the part-time MBA rankings, like, grade point average, peer assessment score, part-time student ratio, part-time students total, GMAT/GRE scores, and work experience. To be eligible, a business school needed to be accredited by AACSB International, a pinnacle standard of business program accreditation.

“We are proud to offer a program with great flexibility and provide working professionals with an opportunity for advancement. This recognition is a testament to the work of our faculty, staff, current students, and alums. We look forward to the continued growth of our Scott MBA Program,” Kyle Rice, Executive Director of Graduate Programs with the SCOB, said.

MJA Visits Scott College of Business

April 20, 202

Matt Van ScyocNearly 50 students packed the Kenneth L. Smith and Theresa Kathryn (Klein) Smith Magna Carta Courtroom on Tuesday, April 18, to learn more about the insurance industry from an ISU alum.

Matt Van Scyoc (pictured), a Scott College of Business graduate ’17 and former men’s basketball player, and Marvin Johnson and Associates (MJA) members spoke about the company’s history and the demands of the trucking industry. Afterward, students were invited to test their skills on a semi-truck driving simulator.

MJA is the largest independent truck insurance agency in the Midwest. The company’s CEO, Steve Johnson, is an ISU alum actively looking for ways to be involved on Indiana State University’s campus.

“Since I’m an alum and an ISU alum hired me on, I want to help the college and its students however I can. We try to talk with students to connect them to the right people even if they aren’t interested in insurance,” Van Scyoc said. “It’s fun to come back and see the changes on campus since I graduated.”

MJA has spoken to students in previous years and hired an ISU student for an internship opportunity in 2022.

Scott College of Business Dean Terry Daugherty said that faculty and staff believe an excellent business education begins in the classroom and happens through experiential learning, professional development, and corporate engagement.

“The business spotlight day involving Marvin Johnson & Associates incapsulates all of these elements and truly reflects the Indiana State advantage. As a professional Matt is developing into a strong transportation leader within the field while staying committed to sharing his experience with our current students. His Sycamore spirit is strong,” he added.

Alumni Association Student Spotlight: Olivia Wagner

April 4, 2023

Olivia WagnerThe Alumni Association recently spotlighted Networks Scholar, Olivia Wagner

How did you become a Sycamore?

I am a proud legacy Sycamore. My sister attended Indiana State University and was also a part of the Scott College of Business. When I came to tour the campus, it was absolutely beautiful. Indiana State gave me the personalized feel I was looking for. I know when I walk on campus, I will see a familiar face. I wanted to be involved on campus, and ISU makes it so easy with dozens of clubs and organizations that students can be part of.

What is your educational background?

After high school, I knew I wanted to study within the field of business because I really like connecting with people. At ISU, I am working toward a double major in the Operations & Supply Chain Management and Marketing. I am also pursuing a minor in Business Analytics.

What is your current engagement at Indiana State University?

I am a Networks Scholar, and work with students within the Scott College of Business. I am also involved in the Scott College of Business Student Advisory Board, serve as the Media Relations Officer for the Association for Supply Chain Management chapter at ISU, participate as a member of the Marketing team for the Student Philanthropy Organization, and serve as a member of the Investment Club.

What is your professional path?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a professional path involving procurement. At ISU, I have participated in internships within the automotive industry that have truly helped me to understand that is exactly where I want to be post-graduation. This summer, I will be interning with Eli Lilly. Procurement is a perfect mix of Supply Chain and Marketing, and is what I look forward to doing throughout my career!

What is a message you would like to share?

I want to thank members of the Alumni Association for paving the way. The generosity and gifts Alumni Association members have provided to Indiana State have helped me become involved in campus activities. I could not be at Indiana State without the scholarship support that I received, so thank you Sycamores! I aspire to be like those Alumni Association members who stay connected to ISU and give back to my alma mater.

Alumni Association Spotlight: David Pack

April 4, 2023

David PackThe Alumni Association recently spotlighted alumus David Pack who was keynote speaker at this year's Diversity in Business Symposium.

How did you become a Sycamore?

I joined the Indiana Army National Guard after my junior year in high school to help pay for college. My senior year, I applied to Indiana State University. Indiana State was my first choice because of the Scott College of Business, the average number of students per professor, the annual cost to attend, and the distance ISU was away from home. I could go home to participate in my monthly Army National Guard drill meetings.

What is your educational background?

I graduated from Indianapolis Public Schools in 1985, following graduation, I attended Indiana State and graduated in 1989 with an accounting degree, I also graduated from Indiana Army Officer Candidate School in 1991.

What is your current engagement at Indiana State University?

I am a part of the ISU Alumni Association. I also took part in an Executive Dining experience with students from the Scott College of Business and met with a small group of honor students to discuss careers and future collaboration. I was also the Keynote Speaker at the ISU Diversity Business Symposium in 2023.

What is your professional path?

After graduating from ISU, I took a position with Chrysler Financial and moved up the corporate ladder for 14 years which required five different relocations. After Chrysler Financial, I accepted a position with Fifth Third Bank. The next 14 years, I continued to move up the corporate ladder and became a commercial banking executive before eventually leaving Fifth Third Bank to start my entrepreneurial journey. Today I am a successful business owner of three companies, a consultant, investor, and mentor.

What is a message you would like to share?

My message is quite simple, I ask that active Alumni Association members reach out to a few of their previous college associates and share their experiences with the Alumni Association and the positive impact on the current students.

Professing Excellence and Inspiring Instruction Recognition

April 3, 2023

Last week Residence Life within the Division of Student Affairs held their “Professing Excellence and Inspiring Instruction” recognition program. Several of the Scott College of Business faculty and staff were recognized by students as having a positive impact on their college experience here at Indiana State.

Professing Excellence 2023 nominees

Congratulations to:Kuntal Bhattacharyya, Judith Brewer, Cory Campbell, Concetta DePaolo, Courtney Richey-Chipol, Tammy Spivey, and Sara Williams

Here is what some of the nominators said about them:

Kuntal Bhattacharyya - He is the backbone of the supply chain program - he puts so much time and effort in to every one of his students and makes sure that they are succeeding. He wants to ensure that all of his students have jobs lined up immediately after graduation and will use his many connections to make sure that happens. He also encourages us to take part in the real world- having discussions in class daily on the things we need to know to keep us informed and ready to tackle the world beyond graduation. If someone is struggling, he never fails to reach out and check on them, and help them where he can.

Judith Brewer - Judith goes above and beyond for each of her students. Judith picks up on our personality cues and strives to make us better employees and people. Judith is familiar with each of our names and I'm sure she could tell you at least one fact or personality trait we each possess. In one classroom of over 40 students and compiled with her work load, course assignments, and additional classes, she takes the time to remember each of us. Although at first intimidating, I now understand that Judith would go to the ends of the Earth to help a student or provide additional resources for someone struggling. I feel acknowledged, accepted, and safe each time I enter Judith's classroom, and I wish more professors were like her.

Cory Campbell - Dr. Campbell has consistently gone above and beyond to assist me during my time at ISU. He has provided me with great advice on everything from how to be successful in my classes to deciding what I want to do after college, and even giving me suggestions on where to start looking for post-college jobs and graduate programs. Dr. Campbell has not only taught me skills to use within and outside of the classroom, but he has also given me tools to continue to learn and grow. I can't possibly begin to thank him enough.

Concetta DePaolo - I have nominated Dr. DePaolo because she is such a great professor and wants her students to succeed. She is a really good professor and teaches her students how to actually use excel and how to use it for the outside world. She understands when her students are struggling and wants to help them.

Courtney Richey-Chipol - I am nominating Courtney Richey-Chipol because she is very interactive with the students in her class and goes over how to do what we're learning very well to where we all understand. She is very easy going and laid back, which is my favorite thing about her. If I had to take another class with her or recommend her to anyone, I definitely would!

Tammy Spivey - I'm nominating Prof. Spivey because she knows how to do her job, she goes through the class very well so we students understand the course. She wants to see us succeed, which is what all professors should do and she happens to do that very well. If the class as a whole doesn't understand she makes sure we get an understanding before we move on to taking the homework so we can be confident in taking it. She's a very helpful and understanding teacher. She also makes the class exciting before it begins by playing calm music so we can feel more comfortable coming into class. She truly deserves this nomination, I've had her since my freshman year and I would definitely recommend her class to any Business majors in the future.

Sara Williams - They make class fun, this is a class I don't feel stressed out by and from taking this class I want to switch my minor.

The championship was Indiana State's sixth men's indoor championship, all of which have come since 2011.

Jackson Krieg, a senior studying Finance and Management contested in the men's mile, distance medley and 3,000 meter run said that:

Being a student-athlete at the Scott College of Business has given me the ability to experience two different yet very rewarding experiences. Through the SCOB, I have gotten the ability to grow as a business professional through the Networks Professional Development Program and other opportunities like traveling out of the country for industry visits and participating in many valuable professional development opportunities that will set me up well for my future.

Though being a student-athlete requires a major time commitment it also has helped me grow as a leader and learn valuable skills that I can take into the business world after I finish my career on the track.

Overall, I believe that Indiana State is the type of school that wants to see its athletes succeed both in the classroom and on the field of play!

Marcus McChristian Earns PhD

February 7, 2023

Marcus McChristianAlumnus Marcus McChristian is now Dr. Marcus McChristian after being awarded his doctorate from Indiana Institute of Technology by defending his dissertation entitled, “A Qualitative Study Exploring the Cultural Adaptation of U.S. Diplomatic Leaders Working in Africa.”

Dr. Marcus McChristian is a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State and received his Bachelor of Science in Insurance from the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University. Throughout his career he has lived and completed tours of duty in multiple countries, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Prior to the U.S. State Department, Dr. McChristian held positions in the private sector as the Director of Finance and International General Manager for several multinational companies. He is also a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Dr. McChristian regularly engages with our college and students as an adjunct professor and speaker.

Abstract of “A Qualitative Study Exploring the Cultural Adaptation of U.S. Diplomatic Leaders Working in Africa.”

The United States government relies upon diplomatic leaders to promote and protect the interest of U.S. citizens all over the world. To successfully carry out these duties, diplomatic leaders are required to establish, build, and maintain relationships with individuals who often have different beliefs, standards, and opinions about how policies and decisions are made. U.S. diplomatic leaders must be able to integrate themselves culturally while managing unavoidable conflict. This study provides information about diplomatic leaders’ conflict management style choices while working in Africa, the most culturally diverse continent in the world. Diplomatic leaders’ ability to integrate into these new cultures and manage conflict while working in African environments often determines their capability to successfully lead host-country nationals and work with local government officials to accomplish U.S. foreign policy agenda.

Scott College of Business students are at the ISU Day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis today. Throughout the day, students will have the opportunity to meet state legislators, discuss their work and activities at Indiana State, and tour the capitol building.

About 40 legislators attended the event. They included senator Jon Ford and representatives Bob Heaton and Tonya Pfaff. Chris Lowery, the state’s commissioner for higher education, was also there.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to interact with government officials,” said Indiana State President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis, who was at the event. ”We’re proud of how they represented ISU and showed lawmakers how we’re developing Indiana’s next generation of leaders.”

Indiana State had about 20 tables including posters promoting student organizations such as the Student Government Association, the campus NAACP chapter, and the Networks Professional Development Program.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch praised Indiana State:

“ISU is a breeding ground for future employees in the state of Indiana," she said. "What is so exciting about the work that Indiana State University does is that seven out of 10 of their graduates stay in Indiana. That guarantees a pipeline for employers. That is a statistic that not every university and college in Indiana can claim."

Networks Financial Institute scholars, Megan Thompson and Andrew Daming are representing the Networks Professional Development Program. Jillian Turner, Jayson Wagler, and Julia Sonntag are attending on behalf of Gamma Iota Sigma and the Insurance and Risk Management Program.

IRM Selective Competition Kicks Off

January 26, 2023

The Indiana State IRM Program was thrilled to be selected again this year to participate in the Selective College Competition taking place throughout February. Students were excited to kick off the competition yesterday!

The competition provides students the opportunity to gain valuable insurance career-building experience through hands-on work and to grow their networks through social and networking events. The competition allows each team to operate a simulated insurance agency and requires the students to leverage their education and experiences to make informed business decisions about building market share, developing products and services, growing profit, promoting their firm, and contending with competitors.

The Indiana State University - Scott College of Business team is grateful to be paired with Agency Mentors from Gibson. Indiana State IRM Program alumni, Brittany Graman, Learning and Development Specialist with Gibson and Jak Kramer, ARM, Commercial Risk Advisor with Gibson will serve as mentors to the team. Thank you for offering your guidance, support, and advice! Best of luck to all the teams!
