Larry Coleman, 1971 - ???

Larry ColemanLarry's exposure to the insurance industry began as a special business insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual Life in Terre Haute, then he taught business insurance and finance at universities across the country. But in 1971, Larry became a family economics and home management professor at Indiana State. Through his years at Indiana State, Larry also served as associate dean of the School of Graduate Studies, professor of management, and now as coordinator of the Insurance Program, which began in 1984.
Larry built Indiana State’s successful insurance program from the ground up. Not too many programs in too many colleges can declare 100 percent placement for their majors, but Indiana State's Insurance Program can. And it didn't take many years for this program to become so successful. In 1984, the dean of the School of Business asked Dr. Larry Coleman, a business professor who taught insurance classes, to "give some thought to developing an insurance program" at Indiana State, because before that time, only five insurance classes were offered.
Larry presented a proposal in June of 1989 to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Three months later, the insurance program was born. And nine months later, the program graduated one insurance major. But that number has grew significantly over the following four years. In the Spring 1993, 85 students majored in insurance and 50 minored.

Robert retired in the summer of 2020 after 36 years of service to the college.

Robert died on November 30, 2022, surrounded by family and loved ones. Bob was born on September 15, 1950 in Vincennes, Indiana to Dr. Virgil "Mac" McMahan and J. Kathleen "Katy" (Potts) McMahan. He graduated from Vincennes Lincoln High School, Class of 1968, attended Vincennes University and transferred to Indiana University to obtain his B.A. in Criminology in 1972. He subsequently obtained his M.B.A. from Indiana State University in 1984 and his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis in 1987.

Bob lived a vast life full of experience and adventure. His careers spanned from interning in the white-collar crime unit with the FBI to a five-star hotel manager to college professor and attorney. He began his law career in 1987 with Wolfe, Frey, Hunt & Olah. In 1992, he opened his private law practice, focusing on Taxes, Trusts, Wills, Estate Planning, Probate, Asset Preservation, Commercial and Business Transactions and other matters relating to individual and business financial affairs. Bob would often say "everything is numbers," and he had a knack for analyzing those numbers.

Bob was admitted to practice law in the Northern District of Indiana U.S. District Court in 1987, the Southern District of Indiana U.S. District Court in 1987, and the U.S. Tax Court in 1997.

Bob retired as a member of the faculty of Indiana State University, Scott School of Business, where he taught Business Law for thirty years. As a professor, he was known for his dry sense of humor and real-life experience. He taught thousands of students and was unforgettable. Bob was a member of the Columbia Club in Indianapolis since 1994, where he enjoyed showing family and friends the finer side to dining. Many of our fondest memories with Bob started with a toast to the evening and were capped off with cigars at a nearby speakeasy.

Bob was the go-to person for any question, which earned him the name "Bobble." When you needed to know something, you didn't google it, you Bobble it. Despite his vast knowledge, Bob never made a soul feel inferior to him.

Bob was a world traveler and adventure seeker. As a child, his family traveled to Minnesota for vacation, where his love of water began. He enjoyed sailing in the Baltic, scuba diving in the Caribbean, and fishing trips with buddies in Minnesota. In summer 2022, he and his sister, Mary, rekindled childhood memories by traveling back to Minnesota for a camping and fishing adventure. Jin Park, Associate Professor, Insurance and Risk Management, 2009 - present

Jin Park, 2019Bachelors, Agriculture, Konkuk University, 1990; Bachelors, Business Administration, Lewis-Clark State College, 1993; MBA, Minnesota State University - Mankato, 1997; PhD, Risk Management and Insurance, Temple University, 2003.
Like some of his students at Indiana State University, Jin Park didn’t know what to study when he entered college in his native South Korea. He decided to earn his first bachelor’s degree in agriculture and had an opportunity to study English and learn about the American culture in the U.S., where he completed a second bachelor’s degree in business administration.
“The first work experience I had in the U.S. was for a small insurance agency as the office manager, helping sales agents with paperwork, underwriting, insurance applications and claims,” said Park, an associate professor of insurance and risk management at State. “I decided I needed to learn more about insurance, so I went to Minnesota State University to do my MBA and study insurance and risk management. That’s where I really developed the interest to take my studies further and decided to go for my PhD at Temple University.”
Park was intrigued by how insurance worked and benefited people in the U.S.
“Growing up in Korea, insurance was a luxury. People in the Asian culture are not actively preparing for death, so it’s a hard place to sell life insurance,” he said. “It was a cultural shock for me to learn that insurance is a necessity here, but as I worked with claims and helped clients and agents on my first job I realized how valuable insurance can be. I saw potential for insurance in Asian cultures, though I have not returned to my country.”
Instead, Park has spent the last 16 years teaching at the collegiate level. Before coming to Indiana State in 2009, he taught insurance and risk management at Illinois Wesleyan University for six years (2003 - 2009).
At Indiana State, Park teaches introduction to risk management, commercial property risk management insurance and employee benefits.
